Exhausts are your Vehicle’s Bottom-Line

ase_certified

Your vehicle’s exhaust system is intended for long-term emission control and increased quietness. But if it is not maintained on a regular basis, it can also be dangerous. There are a lot of older cars and trucks driving around the Triangle each and every day. With fuel prices still well above three bucks as we head into the holiday season, many of these owners do not have the money to purchase a brand new car.

Most of these older vehicles all have original exhaust systems and that can pose issues. Carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication can happen at any time. Parking garages are excellent examples of where higher levels of CO can collect in the structure during busy morning entry and evening exit times.

Never warm a car up in the home garage, especially if it is attached to the house. Start the vehicle and immediately (within 30 seconds) pull out of the garage and shut the door. In less than two short minutes, fumes can collect to harmful levels.

Cold engines run rich increasing CO levels. With the exhaust still cool to the touch, check to see if there is movement with the tailpipe. Excessive movement can often mean cracks are possible in the exhaust assembly. When it is up in the air at Premier 1 Automotive for service, we assess the entire system to make sure there are no leaks or loose piping.

Make sure you include a UL Carbon Monoxide monitor in the garage as a safety measure and place them in the house on each level. Remember a well- maintained car runs clean. Let us check your vehicle, change the oil, rotate the tires, and change the wiper blades as we head into the cooler months around Apex and Cary. If you have over 60,000 miles on your vehicle, let’s see if we can get it running at peak efficiency. There are benefits in both safety and extra gas mileage that make it incredibly important to do.

It is also interesting to note that regular oil changes give your car a long life. And the price of an oil change is MUCH cheaper than a tank of gas. Now that is a great deal.
