The Summertime Blues and Automotive Transmissions

digital art carIt is almost mid-May in the Peak City and we are heading to summer and fun in the sun! Your car knows when May, June, July and August are here. It works even harder to get from point A to point B.  When it comes to vehicle maintenance, most people think when the weather is hot all is well. The only problems seem to happen in the winter time. One thing to remember, summer is tough on engines, brakes and transmissions. Checking all aspects of the drive train is a good idea. Breaking down is never fun and we want to prevent those summertime blues!

For example, the transmission can get very hot when summer hits. It is normal to have the power train up over 200 degrees. And these hot months are when Triangle drivers are on the roads the most. With gas well under the $2.50 mark, it is the busiest time of year for the roads and highways.

When pulling a boat, jet skis, trailer, camper, motorcycles or even lawn equipment, the transmission is working overtime in the heat. Fluid breakdown can happen at any time creating lubrication problems which can harm a transmission.

Check the garage floor or driveway for leaks and small puddles under the engine and transmission. If there is reddish brown fluid on the ground, call Premier One Automotive as soon as possible.

Typically, if a leak is noticed, it has been leaking for a while. Regular fluid and filter changes should be a regular part of automotive preventive maintenance. Check the fluid occasionally for unusual smells and do a color check of the fluids. Consider getting a visual checkup every year or 15,000 miles from P1A.

Fluid and filter changes are relatively inexpensive. Replacement of the transmission is not. The most important thing to do is just pay attention to anything unusual.

We also offer free A/C diagnostics as well. It is important to check the Freon levels. Keeping cool and comfortable in the vehicle’s interior on a hot day is also important.

Give us a call before the heat is on and we will take care of you before that family vacation.
